We have yet to play with players who are colorblind, so we don’t know what they’ll think of the game. But when I found it on the board and saw the huge variety of hues around it, my mind started scrambling for how my cue would be interpreted.

Overall despite a few minor quibbles Hues and Cues has proven to be a great game for our game groups. In general, I prefer heavier games to party games but now and then a party game comes along and hooks me. It’s a competitive game, where everyone’s playing against one another, trying to score the most points.

It’s an interesting strategic element that helps players make meaningful choices with their first guess; it might be the only one they get! Using the Cue as their guide, the other players will place their markers on the color square they believe the Cue-giver is describing. The green player scores three points for the center piece and two for the piece in the upper left corner of the frame.

However, I am reliably informed this is an ignorant assumption on my part as the game is based on colour perception not matching. Honestly you’d rarely have to shuffle the cards because there are four colors on each, and there are so many of them that you’d never be able to tell if you actually had a duplicate.If the maximum number of points a guesser can get is 3 points with a single marker, initiating the scoring after a single cue can limit the points gained by the other players. This color game also presents a perfect opportunity to introduce students to the concept of “ local color“. This color-based puzzle game is a great alternative for those random moments when you might otherwise start scrolling social media.
