About this deal

On heavier-weight tent fabrics—about 68 Denier and above—seam taping is an excellent solution. That’s because the tape adheres to these fabrics well, holding tight for long-term protection. Take time to practice the art of taped seams with specially manufactured tape, and you will be thankful on the next outdoor expedition that you did. Here are instructions for sealing flat seams (such as the Rainhaven Pants and Overalls), as well as curved seams (such as the Sou'wester Rain Hat). PRESSING - Avoid putting the iron directly on the tape and use a presser cloth. Take your time and hold the heat down on the presser cloth. It is a pressing action rather than sliding. Use a tailor’s ham to help with the sleeve seams and curved seams. Lay the seam-sealing tape over the seam on the wrong side of the garment. Ensuring that the tape is flat, and that it covers the seam allowance and stitch lines.

Like any piece of high-performance equipment, your tent requires some care (use these tips). But, a little TLC can go a long way toward maintaining its quality. Seam sealing is the process of applying a layer of tent sealant to the seams of your tent. The purpose of this is to create a waterproof barrier to prevent leaks, as the seams of your tent are the most vulnerable place for water to seep through. Construct seam as directed in tutorial. There should be one row of stitching visible on the right side and two rows on the wrong side.

If your tent is seam taped from the manufacturer, you will not need to seam seal your tent. However, over time seam tape can become damaged and flake away. This is especially the case with thinner and more lightweight fabrics, in which the tape degrades faster. Spread the seam open and cut off the raw edge by placing the thin tip of the scissors 1/4 inch away from the seam line on one side. It does not matter which raw edge you cut off but right-handed people will find it easier to do step 5 if they cut off the right edge and left-handed people will find it easier to cut off the left edge. The name is Gear, Richard ‘High Maintenance’ Gear and believe me, I feel for your peeling seam tape, who wouldn’t?

Yes, you can create your own taped seams. It requires something called waterproofing seam tape which comes on a roll like scotch tape.Decide on a tape brand with a good reputation and try it out at home on a scrap of fabric to be waterproofed. Supplies for a Taped Seam IRON - Steam irons are the best for pressing seam tape as you need a strong bond between the tape and the fabric. This is achieved both with heat and pressure. Seam sealing is a great way to waterproof your tent, putting an end to any leaks. But does every tent need to be seam sealed? And how do you seam seal your tent? We’re aiming to answer all of your questions about seam sealing to make the process as easy as possible for you. You might do it if your new tent didn’t come taped or sealed and you want the extra measure of defense before you head out in particularly foul weather.

PRESSING TOOLS - A pressing ham is a great help and a pressing cloth as well.Create your own pressing cloth by using scrap fabrics, cut into long strips the length of the seams. Lightweight Seam Tape is for your rain gear basics. Design your shoes, clothes, and equipment with freedom. Wrap the longer side of the seam around the shorter side. Place the raw edge right against the seam line and either iron the fabric down or pin it with the straight pins.

Note that we will cover the seam-sealing tape with baking/parchment paper when ironing, so that it doesn't adhere to the baseplate of the iron. Sealing a flat seam Please feel free to join us in the Twig + Tale Chat Facebook group to share your projects, ask questions, or look for inspiration.

In this article, we reveal all you need to know about seam sealing, from how the sealing’s done and why it’s necessary all the way through to the role sealed seams play in keeping you dry on your hiking and camping adventures. What are taped seams? A definition I’m confused about how cutting one side vs the other makes it easier for right-/left-handed people. Can you not just start from the other side of the fabric and achieve the same goal? Sealing your seam for waterproofing is really a choice you make for outdoor clothing that needs to keep you warm and dry.Without taped seams, the tiny needle perforations on the seam will allow water to penetrate your weather-resistant clothing.

Working on your ironing surface, lay the seam sealing tape over the seam on the wrong side of the garment. Ensure that the entire seam allowance, as well as the rows of stitching, are covered by the seam-sealing tape. The tape will become more transparent as it seals. Keep pressing until it is fully sealed. If there are any patches that have bubbles or unsealed sections, go over them again until the whole seam is sealed. Outerwear fabric may be waterproof, but seams and needle holes can still allow water seep through. This can be remedied by applying seam-sealing tape, a waterproof adhesive film. The process is quite simple, and though it adds a bit of extra time to a sewing project, the results are worth it: functional, waterproof outdoor gear, made by you! Materials In the case of damaged or flaky seam tape, it is recommended to seam seal your tent to prevent leaks. If your seam tape remains in good condition, and your tent doesn’t have any leaks, seam sealing is not necessary. Sew 1/8 inch from the folded edge of the seam. The seam will resemble the seam on jeans when you finish this step. If you are sewing on a heavy waterproof fabric like canvas you are done. If you are sewing a light finely woven fabric go on to step 7.
