About this deal

It is so vital that an American audience (mostly African-American at Disney Hall) could hear This Is Why We Kneel when at this time of year we’re far more likely to hear fulsome patriotica that only belies the American reality as it pumps out nationalistic propaganda for mass consumption. Having watched Mark Austin’s emotional interview with Michael Holding on SkyNews I was keen to read Why we Kneel, Now we Rise. This gives the book a real sense of currency and breadth, reinforcing the points about the global and institutionalised charter of racism. These issues are not discussed in detail in society or in education and it is good to have these words on the record.

I think that this is one of those books that should be read within the Modern Studies or History curriculum at schools. It taught me of the atrocities committed by the Australian ruling powers on the native Aboriginal Australians. With innovative coaching and an unflustered attitude to the work and despite surviving an early attempt to banish him from the club, he remained and took a team plagued by many pestilences to the edges of the play offs. His voice is clear and the contributions of other international athletes add weight and measure to his own experiences. He delivers a powerful and inspiring message of hope for the future and a vision for change , and takes you through history to understand the racism of today. he is developing players without having a stable environment for them to come into and has made them very competitive. I agree that this is what it looks like, but it is the other half we have not heard about throughout our lives. Although I was already aware of many of the people and issues covered by Michael Holding, the power behind this book is that these are all within one volume backed by Michael's own thoughts and experiences.

This is not a result of there being a lack of black role models, but rather a white washing of history enforced by those in power. Makaya Ntini was treated as an outsider and as if he didn't deserve his spot on the team, he says, "You've got to do it at grassroots level, at a provincial level.

I still don't know how he managed to do that, because in a book like this, it is easy to get into an Us Vs Them mode, but Mikey doesn't do that. This black t-shirt is more than just a piece of clothing, it serves as a pledge of unwavering support. He sometimes turns his critical, unflinching gaze on himself, and describes how he sometimes failed to protest against racism and fight back, during his playing days. Michael Holding is a Jamaican-born BLACK cricketer who played for the West Indies cricket team and later became cricket commentator for Sky Sports.

But the chorus took on a special, different character here: It’s as if the fathers, the brothers, the elders of the Black community were trying to assert their manly protector role over the nation, as if to say, We are demanding that you stop now, in the name of decency, stop and think what you are doing to our people and our country! After talking during a rain break in a cricket test match about the Black Lives Matter movement, former West Indian cricketer Michael Holding is persuaded to elaborate on his experiences of racisim, and the result is this book. It also carries discussions with other sports stars about their struggles, achievements and activism, including Usain Bolt, another Jamaican; Naomi Osaka, tennis player who walked into the US Open wearing covid masks bearing the names of African-Americans killed by police; and many others who contacted him in response to his video comments. Our kids need to know about how badly people of color have been treated over the years, about all the brilliant and strong and brave people whose achievements were erased or stolen by white men, about how we are more alike than we are different. For those saying it’s right to kneel out of respect for those who have fallen, that has never been a traditional way of recognising them on Remembrance Sunday. To understand the racism of today, Holding explores history – the uncomfortable and unedited history that has been ignored and buried to the ground for far too long.
