The cherry on top to my holiday book collecting is coming home to an ARC of FATHOMFOLK by Eliza Chan! He has crafted a world and injected it with some serious lore, and I can’t wait to see where he takes us next. My words, poetic as at times I can be pail in comparison to the awe-inspiring work of fun-filled escapist wonder that Eames has crafted with Bloody Rose.

Nevertheless, worth mentioning are the explorations of discrimination in Bloody Rose—“evil thrives on division,” which is profoundly relevant for today’s fucked up world, and the discussion of stories and their origin, which is one of the most grimdark (perhaps deliberately) aspects of the novel: “You didn’t get to be the villain of one story, she supposed, unless you were the hero of another. What few records survived through the Reign of Blood suggest that she served as Alicia Dominica's champion, and that when the reformer Sebastian Thor's armies descended upon Terra she slew some of the mightiest invading warriors in hand-to-hand combat.Book 2 follows Tam Ashford, a girl who wanted to be a bard for the best Band in the 5 courts, Fable, led by Bloody Rose. As this book features a large amount of necromancy, some of this makes sense, but mostly the magic in Bloody Rose is there for cool set pieces.
