About this deal

The rest of us who can plan out our lives and sit behind desks are the descendants of the humans who started farming.

Thom Hartmann is the four-time Project Censored Award-winning, New York Times best-selling author of 25 books currently in print in over a dozen languages on five continents. I was intrigued by the concept that ADHD behaviors are not only genetic but may have actually been a preferred survival mechanism. The metaphor of a ‘hunter in a farmer’s world’ fits so many of the ADHD youngsters and adults with whom I have worked. The sections on meditation for ADHD and EEG biofeedback were sadly predictable, and presented a rather tired and superficial picture, especially as they didn't include any of the recent detailed and nuanced understandings of ADHD neurobiological correlates.

They were the kids who always got into trouble, the James Deans of the world, the rootless and unsettled adults like Abraham Lincoln’s father, The Lone Ranger, or John Dillinger. To fit into the Farmer’s world the Hunter needs to break down a task into smaller tasks to compensate for their short concentration span. In some ways this child is acting like a Hunter, hunting for a “yes” with an awareness of everything that is in his environment, yet in today’s world he would be considered a problem. I found it much more coherent this time around and although Hartmann's description of the underlying traits of ADHD are accomplished I am simply unconvinced by his main thesis.A former psychotherapist and founder of the Hunter School, a residential and day school for children with ADHD, he lives in Portland, Oregon.

Am rating a 4 because the Kindle version included things like "For Preview Only" for what I am assuming are minor editorial changes to the new edition. I like that Hartmann draws on biology, genetics, physiology, neuroscience and evolutionary psychology to support his assertions, and found a lot of information that was helpful in understanding, accepting, and developing this aspect of my personality. Although I agree with the basic premise, and the book does contain some original ideas and perspectives, these are fairly limited and the nature of the book is observational rather than scientific.I recommend this for teachers students and parents whether you are a farmer or Hunter, as it helps to understand both types in our changing world. As hunters, they would have been constantly scanning their environment, looking for food or threats (distractibility); they’d have to act without hesitation (impulsivity); and they’d have to love the high-stimulation and risk-filled environment of the hunting field.

As hunters, they would have been constantly scanning their environment, looking for food or threats (distractibility); theyd have to act without hesitation (impulsivity); and theyd have to love the high-stimulation and risk-filled environment of the hunting field. Or were those inattentive husbands distracted from their tools by daydreams of a scrumptious dinner made with herbs from the hillside? Does school, compared to home, provide a unique adaptive context for children's ADHD-associated behaviors? Again, Hartmann offers a number to strategies for the Hunter to find ways to sleep in the current Farmer’s world, strategies often hypnotic in nature. Failure to be fully aware of the environment and notice the faint sound might mean a swift and painful death or the difference between a full belly and hunger.During the Covid isolation she wrote a book about her life with inattentive ADHD which should be published by the end of this year. As an entrepreneur, he's founded several successful businesses which still are operating, and lived and worked with his wife, Louise, and their three (now adult) children on several continents.
