About this deal

Both women are finding their careers taking over their lives and not necessarily the careers they had so desperately worked and wished for.

Though entertaining - you can't help but cringe at some of the situations Imogen finds herself in - the novel takes a hard look at the very real challenges women still face in the workplace today. Lots of interesting characters to bounce off the two main characters Harri and Imogen, paving their way through the world of magazine publishing. Exploring the exhausting push-pull of trying to pin down a career you love but that doesn't love you back, Buchanan's book is set to capture the zeitgeist as so many of us question where we're at.This is a story about Imogen's long fight for her 'dream job' and the pressures women face getting there, especially in the media industry. A love story about work, self-worth and modern womanhood, Careering is, quite simply, the funniest novel I’ve read all year. Maybe it's my fault for reading so many books about lost 20-somethings (don't read into this too much) but this book felt like it had been done so.

Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review! That, and the fact that the story seems to take place in an alternate universe where basic common sense is… not a thing. the narrative did feel a little disjointed due to the quick pov switches between imogen and harri, and some of the dialogue was a little cringey at times. Daisy has also appeared on a number of TV and radio shows including Woman's Hour , The Today Programme , Soul Music , A Good Read , This Morning and Good Morning Britain . Reading about a woman dealing with career burnout was utterly relatable but I found the execution fell a little flat for me. I didn't love Careering quite as much as Insatiable, but it still has the humour and some filthy scenes that feature in Daisy Buchanan's debut. However, somewhere along the way, the story lost its original momentum and that is where I also lost my enthusiasm. We follow Imogen; a 20-something struggling intern working a fashion magazine but who runs a successful blog on the Side in her free time all about Sex and relationships, we also follow Harri; A 40-something woman who has just been passed up for the role of editor in chief and she is now trying to launch an online feminist magazine. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously. As someone far removed from corporate life in London I didn’t necessarily think I’d relate to this book. Will she wake up to the way she's being exploited before her protégé realizes that not everything is copy? Will she wake up to the way she's being exploited before her protégé realises that not everything is copy? Careering will strike such a chord with anyone who has ever walked to a job interview in trainers with a tote bag containing heels over their shoulder, feeling like an imposter.
