About this deal

Loved his other books but this was amateurish a cargo ship converted into a refuge for 100 000 people in less than 48 hours ?

For Tom Rob Smith, known for his series of historical Russian thrillers, which started with his break out debut Child 44, that novel is Cold People. Of course, not everyone is able to complete such a trip, and there are many casualties prior to arrival.

From the brilliant, bestselling author of Child 44 comes a suspenseful and fast-paced novel about a colony of global apocalypse survivors seeking to reinvent civilisation under the most extreme conditions imaginable. Because of the dwindling population, the new society drives home over and over the value of each person. Michaelides takes a literary turn in his latest novel, employing an unreliable narrator, the structure of classical drama, and a self-conscious eye to dismantling the locked-room mystery. Unfortunately, I found myself dissappointed multiple times with the direction of the book as it continued. Well, you never really know what will happen at the time, but we follow our main characters, Liza and Atto, as they join the rest of humanity fleeing to the coldest and most inhospitable part of the world.

However, it is humanity through the eyes of individuals, rather than the response from governments and countries, which seems lacking. Increasingly, tension grows between those who have embraced the DNA modifications as a way of protecting their children from the subzero cold and those who believe that only an entirely new breed of human is capable of surviving in it. Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. How do they and the thousands of other refugees manage to live in this chilly, desolate new world and form communities?I never fully understood quite why an Israeli soldier, with no aptitude for science, would be hand-picked to become a geneticist’s assistant, seemingly purely because he was a closeted gay. Maybe these virtues couldn't ultimately save them from extinction, but they could make the last decades of people some of the best.

New cultures emerge; teenagers fall in love and dream of a better life; and all the while, beneath the ice, something new is growing with dreams of its own. Early into the narration of “Cold People “ I became aware of the magnificent creation of a brand new world by author Tom Rob Smith, and I found myself mentally living within its shadow. In the midst of entertaining us with those fantastical creatures, he also manages to teach us something about genetic engineering, both the science involved and the ethical considerations our world wrestles with today. The book moves through several POVs which was interesting - but a little hard to keep track of the timeline with each. That’s the edict given to the human race when, on an ordinary day in August not too long from now, a superior life-form arrives in the skies above Earth. The main characters were well drawn but also separate from the rest of their society, a fact that was not blatantly expressed.
