About this deal

I'm all for positive birth stories, and empowering women to believe that they can have a positive birth experience. They know the evidence better than we do and are recommending things with a patient centered, evidence based approach. I did find the more practical elements around breathing techniques and packing my hospital bag helpful, but it was not worth purchasing this book for as it's all information that can be easily sourced elsewhere. Maybe that can be true for some people, but for the vast majority of women, even those with positive birth experiences, that simply isn't accurate. In summary, if you have very little knowledge or experience about what to expect and your birth options, the book may be for you.

I'm grateful to no longer be the quintessential helpless father figure, but the "keeper of the cave", responsible for managing the environment, relaxing mum, supporting her through the breathing exercises, and being by her side throughout the experience. Through her teaching she seeks to educate and empower parents - and their birth partners - so that they can enjoy amazing and positive birth experiences, however they choose to bring their babies into the world. Miller describes active labour as "a spa experience to be soaked up" and pushing as "an amazing sensation you'll want to experience again and again". Someone I know recommended this book and I read it within a few days … I now have a totally different mindset and excited for birth. It is somewhat anti medical (again, unrealistic for the majority of births) medical intervention and pain killers are demonised a little which might make first timers feel inadequate if their birth doesn’t end up looking like the ideals put forward in this book. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. People can get as crunchy as they want, myself having packed an essential oil to bring to the hospital, but no amount of woowoo affirmations is going to give a newborn baby the Hepatitis B vaccine. The tone and some of content felt a bit patronising - I never want to heat the BRAIN acronym ever again. Being a first time mum yet to experience labour it’s really help prepare me and put any worries I had at bay.

I was recommended this book by my cousin and it’s definitely been a thought changer when it comes to birthing babies. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I feel like this book was one of the main things that helped diminish my fears surrounding labour and birth, and I ended up having a beautiful experience. It primes men to feel like useless spectators, and more importantly it primes women to fear giving birth. No matter where you sit on the 'anxious-to-excited' spectrum at the moment, by the time you finish this book you'll feel relaxed, capable and genuinely excited about giving birth, because it's truly the most awesome thing you'll ever get to do in your life. Third, to manage the environment, whether it's at home, birth centre, or hospital, to create an atmosphere of relaxation and comfort. Hypnobirthing will change your mindset towards birth and give you the tools needed so that you can navigate your birth - and any twists and turns - with confidence, feeling calm and in control throughout.

By the time you finish this book you'll feel relaxed, capable and genuinely excited about giving birth. When I was in labor, I thought upon SO MUCH that I learned from this book, the main take away being that I have one job, no matter what kind of birth I ended up having: to remain calm.

There are other chapters that I didn't elaborate on in this review that includes helpful guidelines for decision making, explanation about induction, how to practice hypnobirthing during a cesarean birth, and even a complete packing list for a birth bag—information that is good to know for when it's needed. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Her practical advice will be sure to give you enough tools to enable you to feel calm and collected throughout labour - Natasha Harding, Sun --This text refers to the paperback edition. Edit: although ended up not giving birth naturally, this book put me in the right mindset and I am forever thankful. I liked the tips for birth partners, and the accepting and reassuring way the author describes and explains things.
