I found the rainguard a bit fiddly to use – I prefer a sloppier fit – and found that using it sometimes inadvertently lowered an eyecup. For me, the central hinge was a little too loose too, though this could be tightened and may be different on a different sample. Perhaps some of these things could be looked at if there is a Mk. II in the future.

I spent some time with the 8x42s and my initial impressions were very favourable, in terms of image quality, build quality and ergonomics. This binocular looks the business, and is very nice to handle. The open bridge worked well for me – two or three fingers found the gap quite naturally with the other hand ready for focussing. For a 42 mm binocular, this is a pretty compact tool. It is fully waterproof and has a magnesium alloy body, and at 710 g is not a heavy binocular. Some binoculars, especially larger sizes, have a tripod mounting, but it is far from standard. Are binoculars waterproof? So, what about the optics themselves? Well, the image is certainly bright and sharp, maintaining that brightness most of the way to the edge, and also performing well in low light conditions. I did find a slight blurry halo around the edge of the image once or twice, but found it disappeared once I got my eye position right – take the time to find the right interpupillary distance and it pays off.

There’s a price for all that, but you need never buy another pair of binoculars again. The most impressive part of the Viking Peregrine ED binoculars is how crystal-clear the image is. The overall image is flawless and there are no issues with colour fidelity. The ED glass with the phase-coated BAK-4 prisms do a great job of maximising the quality here. Finding any faults with the image quality is difficult. The Viking Peregrine ED binoculars just excel in every aspect.

As previously mentioned, the lenses of the Viking Peregrine binocular contain nitrogen. This prevents any potential fogging in the lenses and allows the binoculars to perform in harsher conditions. However, this also helps to maintain the condition of the lenses. The nitrogen will prevent any build up of dirt or dust. This helps maintain the binoculars in the best condition during use. The afore-mentioned focus wheel takes roughly 1 ¼ turns from close focus to infinity. As is to be expected, they are nitrogen gas filled to prevent internal fogging and are completely waterproof. The optical system employs ED glass in the objective lens construction and the system is fully multi-coated. You wouldn’t expect anything less than the dielectric-coated, phase-corrected BAK4 prism system in this model, and the full complement of internal optics produces a pleasing image. In addition to this, the inclusion of BAK-4 prisms helps to further increase the transmission of light. The design of these prisms helps to take in more light through the binoculars. This helps to make the viewable image much brighter and certainly more defined. This makes the Viking Kestrel ED a fantastic option regardless of your environment. When presented with all the new Viking models at the start of 2018, it seemed obvious to me that the Peregrine was the top of the range. Therefore I was pleasantly surprised by the 6.7° on the 10x42. If we look at the figures on both the Kestrel ED and Merlin ED series, the 8x42s have 8.1° and the 10x42s are 6.5°,

The view is wide and colours are natural, with a slight yellow colour cast, but nothing problematic. Sharpness is very good, and impressive edge to edge, with a hint of softness around the periphery. The image is bright and the EDs did well in low light, even an hour after a June sunset. The close-focus is quoted as 1.5 metres – I managed perhaps a little under 1.8 metres, but I was impressed. I did see a bit of colour fringing, but nothing to get worked up about and there wasn’t a problem when I watched Swifts against an off-white cloud. FACTFILE The inclusion of the BAK-4 prisms in combination with the multi-coated lenses create a bright and well defined image. This increase in light transmission through the lenses ensures that the viewable image is always of a superior quality. The level of quality available with these binoculars is certainly enough to rival binoculars from a higher price point. Furthermore, the Celestron TrailSeeker offer a wide FOV at 8.1°which pairs well with the close zoom. These features operate smoothly and allow for users to easily switch between each focus. Finding the perfect balance between a lightweight yet durable build design is not easy. However, the Viking Peregrine ED binoculars achieve this with ease. The compact design makes the binoculars easy to hold and extremely portable. The binoculars feel incredibly light to hold and this therefore makes them a prime choice for long-term use.
