This isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you just want a practice kit, or you’re new to drumming. The built-in sounds are excellent, they cover a wide range of musical styles, and it’s super easy to start playing some great sounding drum kits in seconds. If you need more customizability though, you should look elsewhere. Compared to most other electronic kits though, there’s definitely nothing ground-breaking happening with Roland’s TD-1DMK module, mainly because you cannot create your own kits from the built-in sounds. You’re simply limited to the 15 preset kits, and that’s it. It’s not suitable for live shows or advanced electronic drumming (unless you’re using midi via USB), but this probably isn’t the reason most people are looking for a kit in this price range. Despite a gratifying playing experience out of the box, the TD-07 also offers a surprising amount of customisation for those who like to delve a little deeper. This includes the ability to change and move virtual microphones, alter room ambience and experiment with a range of effects. These are welcome features for a kit of this size and at this price range and mean you can design some fantastic sounding kits. The drum heads feel really natural and my son had no trouble transitioning from an acoustic set to this one.
