Kōichi, Izumi, Naoya and Yūya, along with fellow classmates Takako Sugiura and Junta Nakao, go to a beach resort to meet Katsumi. They relax when they leave Yomiyama, convinced the curse is ineffective outside town. At the beach, Kōichi discovers Mei, and the group enjoys a fun afternoon. Katsumi joins them, but the only thing he remembers is that he left the clue in the classroom. When Junta drowns and his body is torn up by a motorboat, everyone realizes that the curse may not be limited in Yomiyama. Mei dislikes cell phones, saying that it disturbs her to be connected to other people at all times by electromagnetic waves, most likely a by-product of her solitary nature. Nevertheless, she carries one by request of her aunt. Her hobby is drawing, and she is a member of the school's art club, though she states that she doesn't enjoy creating art so much as she enjoys looking at it. Mei is also very insecure about her prosthetic eye, which is why she hides using her eyepatch. When she shows it to Kouichi for the second time, however, he says that it's beautiful and she doesn't need to hide it. Because of her eye, Mei knows that death is not a blessing since when it happens, you are all alone. Action Survivor: The curse targets basically everyone in the class, Kouichi included, yet when things went haywire, he was ultimately able to pull through when, tragically, few others could. Replacement Goldfish: Yukiyo made a doll which resembles Mei to create a duplicate of the child Yukiyo lost during her pregnancy. Nightmare Fetishist: A mild version. He likes Edvard Munch's " The Scream" because he feels uneasy when he looks at it.Hate at First Sight: She has hated Mei since they first met, claiming to be annoyed by Mei's aloof attitude towards everything. Adaptational Villainy: The anime has her take a villainous role in the climax at the class trip where she tries to kill Mei and tells the rest of the class to kill her, convincing them that Mei is the extra. Adaptational Villainy: Strange though it may seem for someone most closely the series' antagonist, but Izumi at least has standards in every depiction of her...except the film. When Tomohiko plays the tape explaining how to end the Calamity for her and Takako at the Inn, Takako finally stands up to Izumi (who has bullied her for most of the film) and refuses to kill anyone. Izumi's response is to stab her in the throat. Not because she might be the Extra; just because her best friend wouldn't help her instigate a witch hunt against their classmates. Ogura briefly appears only in Chapter 12 of manga and talks with Mei much to Kouichi's surprise. Ogura didn't attend the trip and her role in anime in which she tried to kill Mei isn't present. Ogura survives the curse in the manga. O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Throughout the 3 episodes, she's been nothing but a nice girl, with a lot of questions to ask Kouichi. The only time she ever raised her voice in anger, was in episode 3 scolding Kouichi for mentioning Misaki's name. This was one of the first clues that tipped Kouichi off that Class 3-3 isn't what it seemed. Beware the Quiet Ones: Normally, Yumi seems to be shy and quiet. Two First Names: Her surname Misaki is a common given name in Japan, as seen with the dead student Misaki and her cousin /sister Misaki. This is pointed out to be the likeliest reason why Mei was given to her aunt's family; if Misaki was the one adopted, her name would have become " Misaki Misaki".
