About this deal

This collector's edition of Bram Stoker's Dracula is illustrated with artwork that Edward Gorey created for his stage designs for the novel's Broadway stage adaptation. As a result, he found it challenging to secure book deals — the Toronto Public Library reports that many of his earliest works, like "The Beastly Baby," confused publishers, who found it too dark. So Gorey founded his own publishing company, Fantod Press, and began putting out his own work, often under playful pseudonyms. In fact, as Bookology reports, Gorey's move to Cape Cod in 1983 is believed to have been in reaction to Balanchine's death. At the time, Florence Stoker was engaged in a copyright dispute with the German film studio Prana Film over the film Nosferatu, which adapted the plot of Dracula without authorization, and she needed the money from the play royalties.

Complement Edward Gorey’s Dracula with a look back at this gallery of the beloved illustrator’s other literary masterpieces. The Christian Science Monitor reports that he attended a single semester at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and was otherwise totally self-trained.Stoker's Count Dracula is old, unattractive and bestial, with pointed ears, hairy palms, and putrid breath. Dracula wants to leave but is thwarted by Seward, Van Helsing, Godalming, Miss Morris and Harker, who block the exits and close in on Dracula. Miss Morris also points to latest newspaper describing mysterious cases of missing children, who tell stories of spending the night with a strange beautiful lady and were found in the morning with wounds on their necks.

Drawing on sources as varied as the novels of Agatha Christie and French silent film, he created a uniquely macabre vision of the world filled with crumbling English mansions, jittery dark-eyed flappers and stony faced Edwardian gents where nothing is quite as it seems. Animated ink drawings of couples waltz, lightning flashes, a caped man ducks from view, a woman swoons; this is the darkly comical work of author/illustrator/designer/enigma, Edward Gorey. But Gorey, whose designs (which now extended from sets and costumes to posters, playbills, and merchandise) were the show’s other most central feature, won a Tony Award, himself, for costume design. Van Helsing says that Dracula is the vampire, who is causing Mina’s illness and they must stop him, but nobody else must know about it. S. revival also sparked a new production in London, where it opened on 13 September 1978 at the Shaftsbury Theatre. This exposure cemented his status as a famous artist, but by 1983, Gorey had tired of the notoriety and moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts for a lower profile.
