About this deal

The only purple faced USA from Japan pressing I've heard did not fare well against the Japanese CP35-3148 Black Triangle pressing for me. I’m not claiming UK superiority here because the excellent Private Dancer was a top ten hit in America but didn’t even penetrate the UK top 20.

Tina Turner – Private Dancer (1984, CD) - Discogs

Hilburn, Robert; Hunt, Dennis; Cromelin, Richard; Feather, Leonard; Atkinson, Terry; Johnson, Connie; Pond, Steve; Damsker, Matt; Grein, Paul; Waller, Don; Willman, Chris; Gurza, Agustin; Matsumoto, Jon; Baker, Chris; Shapiro, Marc; Reeves, Jim (December 16, 1984). anniversary edition of Private Dancer, the breakthrough solo album from Tina Turner, one of the world's most loved singers and performers. You should avoid the standard silver face Capitol Canadian and USA pressings as they do not sound good. The packaging is six-panel digipack with decent photo reproduction and this deluxe settles on the UK cover art, albeit with the updated typography (first used on the 1997 reissue). The glossy 16-page booklet does offer the US cover on the back, but of course because it’s a digipack and not in a jewel case you can’t flip the booklet over and slot it in and ‘pretend’ you have the US version. This deluxe edition contains no demos (Mark Knopfler’s demo for Private Dancer would have been really interesting) or alternate versions, or anything unreleased for that matter.

Tina Turner – Private Dancer (2015, 30th Anniversary Edition

It's mindblowing that a woman in her mid-40s could go from not being able to secure an American record deal to becoming a major player on MTV and top 40 radio within a year. Knopfler once said the song was ruined due to "them drafting in Jeff Beck to play the world's second-ugliest guitar solo". Rupert Hine produced " Better Be Good to Me", which had been written by Holly Knight, Mike Chapman, and Nicky Chinn, and most of the other songs. Oh, and feel free to open up the thread to posts on the actual music content; I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on that side too! It’s great to hear from someone who was actually involved, and to that end Martyn Ware’s notes in the booklet are welcome, although he really just ‘talks’ you through the album in a very PR-friendly way.

Roger [Turner's manager] knows Knopfler's manager Ed Bicknell, and Bicknell said, 'I think Mark has a song that could fit Tina, that he never used because he thought it was a song for a girl. In 1997, EMI, the parent label of Capitol Records, released a digitally remastered Centenary Edition of the Private Dancer album on CD. The cover of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and Tina’s “Better Be Good To Me” start side 2 where side 1 left off. I'm looking to snag a copy of this great album on CD, and I've seen a few pre-master Canadian Capitol CDs floating around town recently for cheap. The success of the singles does a great job of illustrating the difference in pop/rock sensibilities on either side of the Atlantic from both public and record companies alike.

I have a club edition press from 1984, and while I love having that just for the nostalgia of having a 1984 from 1984 lol. River Deep Mountain High, Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits and this album are for me the hi spots of Tina's recorded work. For example: “ Better Be Good To Me is a lovely example of the purest of storytelling-style, all mixed up with chants, drama and pathos – you just know it will bring the house down live/ Steel Claw is an out-and-out Springsteen-esque rocker in the grand tradition…”. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice felt that she embraced the "middlebrow angst of contemporary professional songwriting".This album contains the hits "WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT", "YOU BETTER BE GOOD TO ME ", and "PRIVATE DANCER" . After several challenging years of going solo after divorcing Ike Turner, Private Dancer propelled Turner into becoming a viable solo star, as well as one of the most marketable crossover singers in the recording industry.
